Jazz is an international music to which we give an Australian flavour. It’s a music that honours its heritage in the standards which every musician learns to play but which invents new standards. As new musicians take the stage, the face of the music is changing with more young women making their careers as instrumentalists. Over two hours, every week ,Time and Space explores all of these dimensions of this wonderful music. We will hear from Australian musicians who have made their homes, for short periods or permanently, in New York, London, Berlin, across the globe. We will showcase international musicians who are visiting Australia. We will listen to new takes on old standards and find out what music is providing us with the new standards. And we will hear profiles of young Australian women jazz instrumentalists in their own words and music in the continuation of the occasional series “Changing the Face of Jazz”.To contact Time and Space email us at timeandspace@eastsidefm.org

As the hazy smoke filtered through the late night club, things slowly came back into focus. Behind the microphone now stood a man, looking to connect with the audience, armed with a collection of jazz that spanned the decades. As song followed song and strangers interrupted his flow to say something local, people got restless. It was a tough crowd. And they were there for the jazz records. Always the jazz records...To contact Drive-Thursday email us at thursdaydrive@eastsidefm.org

City-making is the most public of all art forms, yet the least publicly discussed. Now, more than ever, we need this conversation. Sydney is changing faster than ever but questions as to how it is changing – and how it should change – are seldom addressed. Are skyscrapers the best way to densify? How do we define heritage? Should more of us cycle to work? Will we continue to work from home? Is the affordability crisis solvable? Must we sacrifice koalas for homes? These questions scarcely rate a mention in the media and even the most energised community groups typically feel excluded from decision-making. The Sydneyist seeks to fill this gap by energising public debate. Each Thursday at 6pm we’ll have lots of talk, some fun, a smidgeon of politics bit definitely NO WHINGEING. Join presenter Elizabeth Farrelly, producer Sophie Kennedy White and their informed guests in sharing opinions and insights on how to help Sydney find its best self. Dr Elizabeth Farrelly is a writer, columnist, academic, multi award-winning critic and former City of Sydney Councillor who trained in architecture and philosophy. She has a PhD in Sydney urbanism and a long history of working from different angles to make Sydney better. She currently writes for The Saturday paper and ArchitectureAU. Her most recent book is Killing Sydney; the Fight for a City’s Soul and the next one will be Saving Sydney; ten ideas towards Sydney’s better self.
