This week on Breaking Waves, Hughie is joined by Jack and DJ for an episode about rugby league, sports history, music and the songs that bring people together.

The show begins with Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best”, one of the great songs associated with rugby league and the NRL. Hughie and Jack talk about how music has helped shape the marketing and identity of the sport, from classic rugby league anthems to the songs that get fans fired up before a big game.

Jack then takes listeners through the early history of rugby league, from its origins in Northern England to its growth in Australia, New Zealand and the modern National Rugby League. The conversation moves into South Sydney history, including the famous anthem “Glory Glory to South Sydney”, its connection to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and Jack’s memories of meeting the Burgess brothers.

There is also plenty of chat about the current NRL season, including Manly, the Tigers, Penrith, Cronulla and the future arrival of a PNG team. As always, Jack brings humour, energy and plenty of bold predictions to the table.

Later in the episode, DJ joins Hughie for a conversation about music. DJ explains why music matters to him, how it can change your mood and bring people together and why different genres suit different moments. The discussion moves from Bob Dylan and The Byrds to the history of disco, the rise of house music, Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body” and the chaotic legacy of Disco Demolition Night.

DJ also talks about his love of country music, with references to early country recordings, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

With rugby league stories, music history and plenty of classic Breaking Waves humour, this episode celebrates sport, sound and community radio.
